Artist Interview – Banana Bill

We meet Banana Bill, as part of our ‘Kao Na’ artist interview series.

9 is a lucky number in Thailand. 9 also means forward stepping or progress. Kao Na or 9 forward.

1.) First things first, what is your favourite Thai meal?
This is a very important question! Hahaha!
Ok, I will say Pad Krapao Moo Khai Dao (Stir-fried pork in basil leaves with fried egg topped on rice. 

2.) Tell us more about you.
My name is William. I am from Toulouse in the south of France.
I grew up in a mix of French and Italian families. My life was bustling with motorcycles and rock music most of the time. I love nature, adventure, discovering new things, cooking, sharing knowledge, getting out of my comfort zone, and making music of course!

3.) How did you start DJing?
I started when I was ten years old trying to mix cassette tapes and CDs with vinyl. I did this without a DJ mixer and add/play African percussions on them. It was noisy! Later on, my friends and I tried mixing music on a DJ mixer, CDs, and vinyl. But I only tried because I was too busy being a motorcycle sportsman. However, when this bike life ended, I went back to Techno parties. I started by playing at home for a few years before going out to play.

4.) What genres do you play?
I play various genres, depending on my mood. It’s between Techno and House. For Techno, I go from Melodic, Progressive, Psy, Minimal to soft Hard-Techno. on the House side, I play Afro, Melodic, Progressive, Tech House. I have a strong taste for electronic, groovy, and ethnic sounds.

5.) Who or what are your music influences?
My influences come from any music that I discover during my travels. So, from radios, bars, clubs, and raves. Back then, my three main influences were Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, and Daft Punk.

The ones who inspired me for Techno are principally Richie Hawtin & Dubfire, Le Son Du Placard, Egbert, Secret Cinema, Popof, The Advent & Industrialyzer, Coyu, Fatima Hajji, Indira Paganotto.

For Progressive music and stuff like that, I would say Stan Kolev, Citizen Kain, Arbat, Olivier Giacomotto, Kaiser Souzai, Rafael Cerato, Kiko, Maceo Plex and more.

For Housy stuff will be Metodi Hristov, David Amo & Julio Navas, Dennis Cruz, Patrick Topping, Green Velvet, Riva Start. I will stop here.

6.) Favourite place to party in Thailand?
Koh Lanta and Koh Phagan for sure. However, there are other nice spots in the mountains and cities as well.

7.) Are you making your own music?/Do you have any tracks out?
Yeah, I am working on my own production at the moment. I only share it at small events as a test while I am playing. That way I can see if I need to make any improvements. Always keep on working. 

8.) What is your all-time favourite track?
Ooooh, this is not an easy one. Laurent Garnier – Crispy Bacon!

9.) Finally, what are your thoughts on the launch of ozonebeach.club?
It’s a very good launch, the team is working well, the artists are doing good things together. We can learn more about each other to increase the quality of music in Thailand.
